<br />The Deados are essentially hell-bound souls who refuse to walk toward the light and cross over to the other side, and choose instead to hide out in the real world as long as they possibly can.  <br /><br />They serve as the main villains in the upcoming 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. and the targets of Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) and his partner Nick Walker (Reynolds)—the newest recruit in the afterlife police force.<br /><br />The concept of Deados is one that is new to the R.I.P.D. mythology.  Devised by director by Robert Schwentke (Red) and writers PHIL HAY & MATT MANFREDI, the idea introduces a new type of threat to humanity— aside from the hideous demons featured in the graphic novels—one that would allow crossover between our worlds.  The writers and directors felt as if this conceit would add another layer to the film’s apocalyptic showdown.  <br /><br />Explains Manfredi: “We wanted to keep the Deados, our villains, as humans for a while and then expose them.  We had this concept of someone who dies and doesn’t want to go to the afterlife and thought it was more appropriate for our story to show what happens if you’re supposed to die and you don’t: Your soul could manifest itself in this bizarre fashion.”<br /><br />Although Deados are able to conceal themselves in human form and hide in plain sight, their souls begin to decay and emit a “soul stank,” a phrase that originated with Schwentke.  The longer a tortured soul remains on Earth, the more its evil metaphysical mojo begins to pervade its surroundings and affect the cosmic balance.  <br /><br />Enter the R.I.P.D. to round them up to face Judgment.<br /><br />By ostensibly correcting any shifts and ensuring the (super)natural order between the living and the dead remains neutral, the universe remains harmonious.   But once Roy and Nick realize the Deados have banded together with a diabolical plan that could topple the delicate balance between the two planes, the two cops realize that the fine agents of the R.I.P.D. are the only ones who can stop the universe from collapsing. <br /><br />It would be up to production designer Alec Hammond, creature designers CRASH McCREERY and EDDIE YANG and VFX producer JULIETTE YAGER to design the looks for dozens of Deados once they “popped,” or had their true nature revealed.  Given unlimited opportunities via digital imagery, they dreamed of creating a multitude of menacing, evil and often humorous-looking creatures.  However, there was one simple rule to follow: A “popped” Deado had to be reminiscent of its real-life counterpart, and it would outwardly appear as an exaggerated manifestation of its crime against humanity.   For example, if he was a thief as a human, the monstrous Deado would appear with giant hands once his true nature was revealed.   <br />
<br />Even when it came to creating an environment for the Deados, regardless of which plane they existed on, Hammond wanted to be specific about his approach: “It was important to contrast the Deado world with where they come from because Deados come from our own existence.  They can be the mailman who delivers the mail or the person who gives you the coffee on the corner.  It has to feel like it could be anybody.  There might be something slightly off, but really they’re hiding in plain sight.”  <br /><br />Look Sharp, Partner: Costume Design Costume designer Susan Lyall worked with Schwentke on two of his previous films, Red and Flightplan, and had the enjoyable task of not only dressing the film’s contemporary characters but also Roy’s Old West sheriff and a multitude of R.I.P.D. cops—officers from almost every period within the past few centuries.  Considering that whatever era an officer dies in marks the era of clothing he or she wears for eternity, the producers and writers took great pleasure in adding their suggestions to incorporate some iconic cop references into the mix.     <br /><br />Lyall welcomed the process, which surprisingly invited considerable research.  She states: “Every member of the R.I.P.D. has a visual reference attached to him or her.  Some, audiences will pick out right away [i.e., Serpico, Popeye Doyle and Cagney & Lacey], but the rest of the looks came from real research.   <br /><br />“It was actually liberating because it didn’t have to be Boston-police specific,” she adds.  “We could choose a police uniform from any state or decade.  We had to create a universe and create rules of R.I.P.D., just in order to function for ourselves.  They’re not rules that are necessarily apparent to the audience, but the rules existed for us to limit our universe and find a way to kind of make sense of what was a very open concept.” <br /><br />While Nick would remain dressed in 2013-appropriate Boston Police Department gear, Roy was a bit trickier.  For the grizzled cop, Lyall brought in hints of rock-and-roll imagery—from the wraparound sunglasses to the cut of his vest and long sheriff’s duster.  The rogue sensibility offers a visual link to the graphic novel’s aesthetic as well as indicates that Roy is the longest-serving officer there (to Proctor’s alternate annoyance/enjoyment).  Indeed, his multiple infractions during his tour of duty just keeps extending his time with the R.I.P.D.<br /><br />Starring alongside Bridges and Reynolds are KEVIN BACON, MARY - LOUISE PARKER, STEPHANIE SZOSTAK, JAMES HONG,  MARISA MILLER, ROBERT KNEPPER, MIKE O’MALLEY and DEVIN RATRAY.<br /><br /><br />“RIPD” opens August 21, 2013 in theaters nationwide is released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Credits: Photo and press release provided by Solar Entertainment Corporation</span><br />

It was an entertaining speech but taken seriously contains a lot of realities and challenges to us Filipinos in the fight for corruption.<br />
<br />
Here are some of Juana's thoughts about the issue and my opinions as well.<br />

<b>"Konti lang at di kaya</b><b>"</b> - As of 11 am, the estimate was around 100,000 according to the police. It's not a million but a very good number. And of course, this does not count the participation in the social media. It might not be a million but still in my opinion it was a success since it did not only create a spark but pockets of fire everywhere and a raging fire at Rizal Park and in the social media.<br />
<br />
<b><b>"</b>Mahina</b><b><b>"</b> - </b>When Juana ask the people the initial response was poor. She had to re-iterate and ask them again until a reasonable response was heard. We Filipinos are sometimes too timid to express ourselves. Masyado tayong matiisin.<br />
<br />
<b><b>"</b>Illusive Suspects and Slow Enforcers</b><b>"</b> - The fact that Janet Napoles has eluded and escaped  authorities makes us really scratch our heads. Something fishy happened or it's just our government's incompetence in these matters.<br />
<br />
<b><b>"</b>No real change in this country</b><b><b>"</b> - </b>That's a very pessimistic view but maybe grounded a bit in reality. But of course, let be optimistic and dwell that Filipinos "Juana Change"<br />
<br />
<b><b>"</b>Hangang today only</b><b>"</b> - The reality that this fight for scrapping the Pork Barrel system and it's other shapes and forms of corruption will not disappear overnight because we tweeted, we shared in Facebook wall, or we marched in Luneta.  This is a long battle for everyone. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. So hang-on and continue the battle.<br />
<br />
<b><b>"</b>Only the tip of the iceberg</b><b><b>"</b> - </b>I definitely agree. The deeper the investigation goes, the wider the involvement of our politicians will be revealed.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>"Hawak (nila) ang systema"</b> - This is the challenge. How to get those who are currently seated in policy making, investigation, law making, enforcement burn their own or allies in the scrapping of the PDAF and putting to jail/punish the ones who steal from our coffers. For them, it's like cutting the hands that feed them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>"Epal among us" - </b>Everyone wants to ride on the wave. Even ex-Chief Justice Renato Corona attempted to join the rally but booed by the marchers.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>"Same old same old"</b> - Trapos, political dynasties, patronage, Pork Barrel encourages these. Scrapping it will definitely impact these for the better!<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>"Who has the last laugh?" - </b>I hope it's not Janet Napoles and his political friends who has escaped or will escape with our hard earned taxes that we pay to our government. Hopefully not the corrupt, the people who enriches at the expense of the working class and deprives the poor of the basic services the government can give them with well spent and accounted revenue from taxes.<br />
<br />
<b>"Can we really change?" - </b>Pessimist: No,  Optimist: Yes,    
Realist: Yes, but it will take time. Change is NOT enough, 
TRANSFORMATION will be the only option. But even our heads of government are not Magicians. We of course expect them to create the policies, the infrastructure  and govern us.  But we have to transform ourselves first!  Corruption starts with us when we break traffic rules and bribe the enforcers, when we pay under the table to speed things up, and so many wrong things that become acceptable to us because it's so common.  So the answer is not only with our government, but the answer depends also from <b>YOU</b>!<br />

SM Little Stars is a nationwide kiddie talent competition and a performance platform for kids from 4-6 years old.  SM Little Stars, as spearheaded by Mr. Hans Sy, originated from SM China malls then later on adapted by the malls in the Philippines.  Through the years, SM Little Stars keeps on growing as a contest through providing bigger prizes, kiddie workshops, TV exposures and having a cultural exchange program with SM China malls as winners from Philippines and China interact with each other during the Grand Finals, rendering a production number and individual performances of their talents.<br />

SM Little Stars is on its seventh year this 2013. <br />

Because of SM’s wide coverage in the country, aspiring kids have easy access to joining this mallwide kiddie talent competition and performance platform<br />
Aside from SM Little Stars’ objective to find the brightest, shining and aspiring little kids that we may dub as our "Little Stars", it also gives these kids a chance to showcase not only their talents, but also to have fun and gain confidence through various public exposures and workshops, and potentially win huge and exciting prizes. This makes SM Little Stars the perfect avenue to stardom.<br />

August 21, a holiday, but it's another rainy day although the weather man reported that the typhoon Maring was already out of the Philippines area of responsibility. Picking up and dropping my family to different locations by car, I was heading back home. It was almost dinner time so I felt hungry.  The rainy weather made me crave for some "rainy days" comfort food. Soups and noodles are on top of my list.  I remember that there is a King Bee Chinese restaurant in Commonwealth Avenue across  Batasan area. I wanted to try it out for some time now, so I decided this is a good time to try it and have some Chinese noodles soup.<br />

Driving through the heavy rains along Commonwealth Avenue, I arrived at the restaurant.  There was plenty of parking space. The guard with an umbrella approached me to shelter me from the pouring rain while disembarking from the car.  Nice service! <br />

Inside, the restaurant, looking around, the place was quite nice and classy.<br />
<br />
After looking at the menu, I decided to go for a Roast Duck Noodles Soup. I love roasted duck and with a hot soup and noodles, it will be the perfect rainy day comfort food for me.  <br />

The soup base was very tasty. It's my type of noodle base soup.  The noodles were quite tasty blending well with the soup and the meat of the roasted duck.  Of course, the star of the show is the roasted duck.  Roasted nicely, the flavor and texture of the game fowl / duck is what makes it perfect for this soup.  Compared to braised beef (which is also one of my favorite), this is much lighter and tastier.  I love this Roasted Duck Noodle Soup.<br />

The dish is Php 220 but the portion especially of the duck is quite good value for money. There plenty of noodles to fill the hungry me. It was quite filling and satisfying. I highly recommend it! <br />

There was no work today, August 20, 2013, because of the flooding brought by the enhanced monsoon rains by tropical depression Maring.  My daughter was asking me whether it's too flooded to go out because she was getting bored at home.  She got excited when I invited her to join me to pickup my wife from work, dine out and go grocery shopping! I was craving for some of my favorite comfort food in this bad weather. <br />

We braved the heavy rains to pick my wife up from the Technohub area. Fortunately there was no flooding in both sides of the Commonwealth Avenue from Batasan to Q.C. Memorial Circle.  After picking up my wife, we went to Shopwise Commonwealth to eat first at Lingnam and then do the groceries afterwards.<br />

My first experience of Lingnam was in High School (circa 1979) when I was doing typing lessons at C. M. Recto.  The have a branch there next to Maxim & Miramar movie theater near the university belt area. I love the beef mami because of the right mix of salty/sweet of their asado beef briskets.<br />

I ordered Beef Wanton Noodles but unfortunately they have only 1 portion of noodles left for my daughter's order of Crispy Noodles. I decided to order the next best thing: Beef Wanton Soup. The same thing minus the noodles.  And of course, it's like fish and chips, when you order Mami, there should be also Siopao. I ordered Asado Siopao.<br />

They give a soup base on a separate bowl in addition to the bowl of yummy asado beef brisket in beef sauce + 5 generous portions of steamed wantons. <br />

The portion was quite big enough to serve 2 persons especially with the siopao.  It was great to have this warm tasty meaty soup to lift your mood in the gloomy rainy weather. I love their beef brisket and wanton. <br />

Back to the Crispy Noodles my daughter ordered (where my noodles were allocated), it was a huge portion easily enough for 2-3 persons. The noodles were fried and crispy to give texture to the ala chopsuey sauce that was yummy with veggies including mushrooms. This is something that has to be tried. Yummy!<br />

Having worked in the Middle East for 25 years in the cities of  Manama, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Jeddah and Al-Khobar, I acquired a taste for Middle Easter cuisine.  It offered lots of varieties with influences of Persian, Arabic, Mediterranean, and even African and Indian cuisine.  I mentioned "acquired" because some of the dishes were not love at first taste.<br />

Having been back in the Philippines for 3 years now, I occasionally miss and crave for my Middle Eastern favorites like kebabs, shawarma, freshly baked pita breads, hommus, biryani rice and other favorites.<br />
<br />
Last August 10, I was invited by a fellow blogger, Ross of <a href="http://www.wazzuppilipinas.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.WazzUpPilipinas.com</a>  to review Kebabers restaurant in SM City Manila. I was really excited since I love Middle Eastern food.<br />

As I enter the place I was impressed with their settings. It offered a clean, bright atmosphere with looks at par with the well known fast-food outlets found in the Metro.  They even have bag hooks under their sturdy tables for convenience and safety.<br />

Here are some of the food that I tried:<br />

<b>Beef Pichos </b><br />

With other fellow bloggers, we started with the Beef Pichos for appetizers. Can be termed as the Persian Nachos is similar to the Mexican version but instead of using corn tortillas, they use deep fried pita bread as a crunchy base with generous toppings of ground beef, chopped cucumbers, tomatoes and onions topped with tangy garlic sauce and lots of cheese. I definitely enjoyed this appetizer and highly recommend it as a starter when dining as a group. Or alone or shared with someone, you can even have it as your main dish. The garlic sauce with a tiny bit of bite of spiciness really accented the rich flavors of this sumptuous dish.<br />

Kebabers Shawarma comes in different flavors:  Chicken Kebab, Keema, Beef Kebab, and Steak.<br />
It's a bit different to your typical Philippine shawarma. It even had some potato strips for texture and garnish.<br />

Yes, with oozing cheese filling on the inside!  It's not my typical Middle Eastern kebab but it's quite tasty as well.<br />

I enjoyed dining at SM City Manila's Kebabers! The price is just right for the budget conscious and the place is quite clean and pleasant. It might not be your authentic Persian / Middle Eastern version in the Philippines but given the price and variety, or the variation attuned to the Filipino palette, it's definitely one of my place to get my fast-food fix. <br />
