Kuya's Special Lumpiang Sariwa: Not your typical Pinoy Lumpiang Sariwa

One of my favorite healthy food when I in "healthy eating" mood, is lumpiang sariwa (fresh vegetable spring roll).  As you have seen in my previous review of Globe Lumpia House,  it is one of my favorite Filipino veggie food!

Kuya's Special Lumpiang Sariwa is not your typical Filipino lumpiang sariwa. It's a variant of the original lumpiang sariwa.  Aside from the standard recipe ingredients of "Ubod" (Coconut pith), carrots, lettuce and garlic, it differentiates its taste from the norm with two special ingredients:  Thailand grass and Moroccan Nuts! These two ingredients give the dish a different but "desirable" flavor. The two additional ingredients have anti-oxidants, fiber, detoxifier, Vitamin E,  protein and Selenium make it a delight not only for the tummy but also for the body.

The lumpia costs Php. 50 pesos and is available in most of the food courts in major malls mostly as kiosk.

Kuya's Lumpiang Sariwa outlet at SM City North EDSA Food Court

I rate Kuya's version 3.75 out 5. Its different taste is something that you will like or hate. I like it but not as I love Globe Lumpia House's version because its a bit more sweet. I still recommend Kuya's version especially for the health conscious. It's still one of the best version of fresh spring roll around. It prefer it than the Bodhi's version.

So if you are in the food courts and looking for something healthy and enjoyable to eat as a side dish or even the main dish, try Kuya's Special Lumpiang Sariwa and enjoy a veggie delight!

Coverage of Araneta Center Grand Santacruzan

In the Filipino tradition for the festivities of May, the Santacruzan is one of the most colorful (and beautiful) heritage.  Araneta Center in collaboration with the parish church celebrated Flores de Mayo with this Grand Santacruzan.

Here is my coverage of the event:

The winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2013 lead the line up of the much-awaited Araneta Center Grand Santacruzan that reels off on Saturday, May 18. Joining the queens are the candidates of the recently concluded Binibining Pilipinas pageant.

The Santacruzan is an iconic Filipino tradition that commemorates the search of the Holy Cross by Reyna Elena and her son, Emperor Constantine. The festive mode of thanksgiving of finding the Holy Cross in Jerusalem is replicated many times over in several parts of the country during the fiesta month of May. However, none compares to the pageantry and the overload of beautiful Binibinis of the Araneta Center Grand Santacruzan. The event has become a staple in the celebration of Flores de Mayo in the metropolis.

The joyful celebration is made more spectacular because of the ladies that are clad in gowns designed by leading Filipino couturiers. This year is even more special as the country’s premier beauty pageant celebrates its golden year. Some of the exquisite creations of these designers were worn by the Binibinis during the National Costume Competition of the Binibining Pilipinas Gold. Miss Universe 2012 1st runner up Janine Tugonon adds star value to the proceedings as this year’s Reyna Elena. 1981 Binibining Pilipinas International Peachy Sacasas-Veneracion is the Emperatriz.

A new highlight of this year’s Grand Santacruzan at the Araneta Center will be the “living rosary” that will be participated in by the Binibinis and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish’s pamayanan sagalas. This will serve as a fitting culmination to this majestic cultural activity featuring the fairest maidens of the land in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Children and members of the media were among that enjoyed balloons and treats from Krispy Kreme.

The Grand Santacruzan at the Araneta Center reels off at 4pm from the Gateway Park beside the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Star Trek Into Darkness Movie / Film Review

Last May 10, I saw the movie Star Trek Into Darkness at the SM City North EDSA IMAX Cinema during the advance Press screening of the movie.

Excited because I have also seen the first 28 minutes scene at Planet Nibiru during a special preview, I really looked forward to seeing the movie. Full of excitement and watching it in IMAX and 3D really got my blood pumping.

Being a sci-fi fanatic, but not much into Star Trek, I watched the movie with enthusiasm. From start to end, I was engaged with the action, and the storyline of the movie.

The 3D effects were quite good in showing depth adding another dimension to the movie enjoyment experience.  Compared to other recent 3D movies like GI Joe Retaliation, the 3D was very good.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and was entertained. I rate it 4 out 5 for its entertainment value, Trekie or no Trekie.  I highly recommend watching it in 3D.

Star Trek Into Darkness is showing in cinemas nationwide starting May 15. Enjoy!

Movie Trailer:

Star Trek Into Darkness :  on a deadly manhunt to capture those who devastated the Starfleet.

The USS Enterprise is sent to observe Planet Nibiru, but finds a volcano on the verge of erupting and wiping out its primitive inhabitants. In the process of launching a dangerous mission to halt the eruption, first officer Spock's life is jeopardized, forcing Kirk to break the "Prime Directive" and reveal the Enterprise to the planet's civilisation to rescue him. As a consequence, a number of indigenous people begin to worship the ship as it leaves.

After being called back to Earth, Kirk is relieved of command, and Admiral Pike re-assumes command of the Enterprise. Shortly afterward, Starfleet agent John Harrison bombs a secret "Section 31" installation in London. An emergency meeting of high ranking officers is called at Starfleet headquarters, which Kirk attends as Pike's first officer. The meeting is attacked by a gunship piloted by Harrison. Kirk takes the gunship down, but Harrison escapes and Pike dies.

After Pike's funeral, Admiral Marcus (Weller) authorizes Kirk to hunt down Harrison, who has fled to the Klingon homeworld of Qo'noS. Since Qo'noS lies deep in Klingon territory and Starfleet is on the brink of war with the Klingon Empire, the Enterprise is supplied with 72 long-range prototype photon torpedoes, and is ordered to fire them all at Harrison's location once he is found. Believing the torpedoes could be dangerous to the ship, chief engineer Montgomery Scott refuses to take them aboard and tenders his resignation when ordered to accept them. The Admiral's daughter, scientist Carol Marcus also joins the crew, under a false identity, and Pavel Chekov is promoted to Chief Engineer.

Several twists and turns of events will turn Admiral Marcus and Captain Kirk into opponents.
With Marcus in pursuit, the Enterprise is attacked by the superior starship Vengeance in Earth's orbit. Outgunned, the Enterprise is severely damaged. Ultimately Kirk agrees to hand over the Klingon Khan and the 72 bodies in cryo sleep in exchange for the lives of his crew. Marcus refuses and beams his daughter aboard to prevent her being used against him.

Will Admiral Marcus ultimately destroy the Starfleet’s USS Enterprise commanded by Kirk? Watch how this great inter-galactic action-suspense-drama in the latest Star Trek adventure concludes.

The movie stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Karl Urban as Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard “Bones” Mccoy, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov, Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, John Cho as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, and Bruce Greenwood as Rear Admiral Christopher Pike who return to reprise their roles from the previous film, with the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve to the cast.

Star Trek into Darkness is a Paramount presentation directed by Producer/Director J.J. Abrams. It is distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation. Showing at your favorite theaters and cinemas on May 15.

How to get a chance to get FREE Tickets to Philippine Fashion Week 2013

Another season of Philippine Fashion Week, Holiday 2013, this May 22-26, 2013 at the SMX Convention Center and SM Mall of Asia.

A great opportunity to watch the designers showcase their art and skills to prove that Filipino designers are one of the best in the world.

It's also a great chance for seasoned and aspiring photographers to capture the clothes and the models at the runway!  I love photographing fashion shows. I have been to a couple of Philippine Fashion Week events and also fashion catwalks in Dubai when I was working there.

Here are some of  photos from the Triumph Show at a previous Philippine Fashion Week:

Check out my Coverage of Supermodel Philippines Finals at the Philippine Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013

How to get a chance for a FREE ticket

To get a chance to be selected as a guest, go to their registration page and complete the registration process. It's not a 100% but you might get lucky.

If you don't get invites, you can always head to the SM Mall of Asia and watch some of the runway shows open to the public. You just need to go earlier than  the schedule so that you can get a good place to photograph.

For more details, please visit the Philippine Fashion Week Holiday 2013 website.

Good luck and hope to see you there!
